They surely knew this text to be messianic, but they had always applied it to the Gentiles. The Son of Man had the power to forgive sins, as well as to heal a paralytic (Matthew 9:6). And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. (1 John 3:13, NASB95)[5] The more we know about the future the more are hearts should be moved to practical preparation. Quite clear, however, is the identity of the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man.. The three and a half years referred to here in Daniel is the last half of the tribulation, also called the Great Tribulation and the Time of Jacobs Trouble. Daniels dream here in chapter 7 and Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 are one and the same dream with additional details added to Daniels dream. The First Vision is a dream of the king that is interpreted by Daniel. In the context of the coming of His kingdom and the suffering and trials which precede it, soberness is a vitally important quality which prophecy promotes: 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. We have talked about several times since starting this series about how studying Bible prophecy should influence you. The second and third beasts are briefly described in verses 5 and 6. His mouth is used to speak boastfully. The vision recorded in chapter 8 took place in the third year of Belshazzar. (6) None of the kings or the kingdoms are identified. Prophecy is always practical and relevant to the person(s) receiving it. This morning we want to look at verses 15-28 and the interpretation of Daniels dream. The second is Daniel's dream. Two weeks ago, we quickly looked at the description of the beast that John sees in Revelation 13 and he described it as a composite of the first three beasts, the body of a leopard, the feet or paws of a bear, and the head and mouth of a lion. Nebuchadnezzar's Dream ( Daniel 2:1-16) Say: Some time later, the King had a dream. The emphasis of this brief interpretation falls not on the enemies of God, their power, their brutality, nor their boasting, but on the kingdom of God, its certainty and its permanence for all the saints forever. Daniel explained to the king that the statue represented four successive kingdoms based upon power and wealth, beginning with Babylon, while the stone and mountain signified a kingdom established by God that would never be destroyed nor given to other people. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. There seems to be a close connection between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which is revealed and interpreted in chapter 2, and the vision of Daniel in chapter 7. Twice in chapter 7 Daniel speaks of his distress: As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me (verse 15). In his interpretation of the dream, Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar he was the head of gold. (See Daniel 2:24, Note. 31-35). Rather than publish what he had learned he kept it to himself, until that time that the Holy Spirit guided him to write down and reveal what he had learned to the saints. While conservative, evangelical scholars believe the prophecies in Daniel are true, their interpretations differ greatly. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. 1. The second scene portrays the establishment of the thrones on which the Ancient of Days and those holding court are to be seated to pronounce judgment. Prophecies are given so that we may look at history, especially events occurring in our own lifetime, from Gods perspective. In fact, Daniel has trouble interpreting some of his own dreams. God grants this king success and his saints suffering, but only for an appointed time. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. (3) This chapter contains the major segment of Daniel, which is primarily prophetic, although it does not contain the first prophecy in the Book of Daniel. 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. This is what we need to know from Daniels vision, rather than the identity of the beasts. An eleventh king then rises to power, different from the others, replacing three of the previous kings. Jesus applied this text to them, not as those who would enter into His kingdom, but as those who would be judged at His return. Some of his alarm arose from his not yet having been given the interpretation of his vision. The wicked will prosper and appear to get away with their opposition toward God and His saints. A lawsuit could force the F.D.A. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to earth, having added perfect humanity to His undiminished deity, He spoke of Himself very often as the Son of Man. In the Gospels, Jesus began not only to identify Himself as the Messiah, the promised Son of Man, but also to explain all that this involved. The horn of the beast that made war against the saints was one of 10 kings who prevailed until the Ancient of days came and judged against him in favor of the saints. Daniel's prophecy was one of hope. We are told the Old Testament prophet could not see the distance between the first and the second coming of our Lord, just as one cannot see the distance between two mountains, when viewed from afar. Nothing has caused him to panic or depart from his faith and practice as a godly Jew. The vision plays on before Daniel, almost as though in answer to his desire to know more. Prophecy becomes necessary from time to time to remind men of those things God has planned for the future which He will surely fulfill. (3) The finest commentary on the prophecy of Daniel 7 comes from our Lord Himself. With iron-like teeth, horns (some with eyes), and feet, it is utterly destructive. Nebuchadnezzar may have started badly, but by the time we read of him in Daniel 4 he seems to be a true believer in God, urging the citizens of his kingdom to worship and serve Him. God is in no hurry to fulfill His promises, whether His promise of the eternal kingdom for all the saints or the promise of eternal destruction and judgment for sinners. But I want you to notice Daniels reaction to the dream that he had. The prophecy of this chapter is divinely interpreted. This angel, beginning in the second half of verse 23 is describing the revived Roman empire which is yet future. As Daniel continues to watch, another horn emerges, as three of the other horns are plucked out by the roots to make room for it. Yet Gods covenant to David (2 Samuel 7:16; Psalm 89:14) stands and will ultimately be fulfilled. Both series of four kingdoms begin well and end badly. This is describing an event that has never happened in the history of the world and is yet future. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. In the Old Testament, the expression son of man was used most frequently in reference to men, who were merely (as opposed to God) human. (6) How important is it for us to identity the kings and the kingdoms mentioned in our text? The next three are waking visions seen in the presence of angels, followed by an appearance of the Messiah - the Son of Man - to interpret the vision for Daniel. As the wicked prosper in their sin, it seems as though they can continue in sin without any fear of divine judgment (see Psalm 73:1-11; 2 Peter 2:3-4). Daniel 2 (the second chapter of the Book of Daniel) tells how Daniel related and interpreted a dream of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon.In his night dream, the king saw a gigantic statue made of four metals, from its head of gold to its feet of mingled iron and clay; as he watched, a stone "not cut by human hands" destroyed the statue and became a mountain filling the whole world. What so upset Daniel about the future? Those who will reign with Christ are those who have suffered (see Romans 8:17; Philippians 3:10-11; 2 Timothy 2:12). Because of his wisdom, and the favour of God, Daniel rose to a position within the Babylonian government. The boastful beast becomes even more aggressive, waging war with the saints and even overpowering them. The king called for his magi to interpret the nightmare. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. Da Dn). The lesson was prepared for older students. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. When the iniquity of the blasphemous horn reaches full bloom and his appointed time to rule is fulfilled, God will destroy him, casting his body into the fire. A number of lessons from our text have broad application to our thinking and conduct as Christians. It is good for us to understand the theology of the end-times, but we must approach it with reverence. In addition to the beasts iron teeth, Daniel tells us that the beast had claws of bronze. The other prophecies were revealed to King Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar and interpreted by Daniel. Chapter 2. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). In Gods economy, things are not what they appear to be. Prophecy is not revealed in a historical vacuum. Usually it refers to a person as a human being. (5) What do the four beasts represent? In Daniels dream the Greek empire and Alexander the great were represented by the four-headed, four-winged leopard. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). His final offspring, so to speak, is the little horn which becomes the great blasphemer, whose life and kingdom is suddenly cut off by the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man. A look through the Scriptures shows that Daniels response to the prophecies he received was not unique. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him." Upon hearing the details of the dream, Daniel too was troubled (4:19). The winged lion was a symbol of Babylon, in any history museum that has a Babylonian section you will find artifacts of a winged lion. (4) Prophecies not completely fulfilled cannot be fully understood until after their fulfillment. Introduction to Daniel 11 Child-bearing is a process which involves suffering and glory. But in the end, God will judge the wicked and establish His kingdom for His saints. The prophecy of Daniel 7 nevertheless had great relevance and application to those in Daniels day. He had lived through the overthrow of his people, his nation, and his hometown by a foreign power, he had been torn from his family and carried off into captivity. The three ribs may also represent the kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon which preceded the Medo-Persian empire and then fell to them. Arrogant, boastful, and even blasphemous kings will reign over the nations, opposing God and oppressing His saints. (1) The Book of Daniel is a part of the Holy Scriptures, and thus inspired, accurate, and trustworthy. This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. After this chapter, the book returns to the Hebrew language. (13) In some sense, the last kingdom is still on-going. His declaration, which resulted from the deliverance of the three Hebrews, made it unlawful to hinder the worship of the Jews; his decree recorded at the end of chapter 4 went much further. Each beast has its own unique characteristics. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. When the child is born, the pains of suffering are quickly lost in the joys of seeing a new life. No wonder this vision causes Daniel such distress. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. So, I began the review by looking at the first 14 verses where Daniel gives us a summary of the visions he had as he dreamed in his sleep. Many Old Testament prophets shared Daniels distress as a result of the prophecies they received and often conveyed to others.74 Why does the prophecy of Daniel 7 cause this godly man so much consternation? Episode 5 of "How I Met Your Father" Season 2 tested the friendships of everyone in the group. The expression is used in the Psalms in a more pregnant way, in reference to the coming Messiah. Verse 17. a. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. For the remainder of Nebuchadnezzars life, it seems that religion in the kingdom of Babylon was at least favorable to the worship of the God of the Jews.
